Description
Particle acceleration provides a unique application of radiofrequency energy that
presents a wide variety of engineering challenges. Materials must be able to withstand
high instantaneous and high average power levels, easily reaching multi-megawatt and
kilowatt levels respectively. This overview of the RF systems used in the front end,
linear accelerator, and accumulator ring of the Spallation Neutron Source provides a
good summary of high-power RF technology, its application in particle acceleration, and
what it takes to operate it reliably.
